Everything you ever wanted to know about First Contact and weren’t horrified to be told. Let’s not forget what a fantastic job Jonathan Frakes did directing. He truly proved himself a more than advantageous director for feature films. We all know what a broad job he did unhurried the cameras on the T.V. note. My boyfriend and I watched it together and he was really impressed. He asked me how considerable it cost. When I told him how inexpensive it was he bought two copies. One for a gift to another Treky fan. I highly recommend this two disk place and suggest you prefer it upright away before they race out. If you’re not glad with it, I’ll pay you for it. That’s how remarkable confidence I have that you’ll absolutely Care For it. Maintain me when I articulate you this is one rob that you will never regret. ORDER NOW!!! In response to your comment first of all thank you for reading my review and please feel free to check them all out. You are true I didn’t leave enough information on my personal feelings. I understanding the film was terrific. It lived up to the quality that we are former to getting when we stare anything that starts out with the heading Star Race. The storyline was very captivating, it was as usual well acted, written, directed, huge effects. I agree I could have done a better job on the body of the review itself. I’m busy writing another review as we suppose. Thank you for taking the time to read my comments and I will strive to do better in the future!

Even though Star Trek: Generations was a obliging first entry in The Next Generation era of feature films, it wasn’t until Rick Berman, Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga wrote Star Trek: First Contact’s narrative and screenplay that Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crew proved that they could carry a Spin film without serve from The Recent Series’ cast.

It also helped that the film was more action-oriented than Star Dash VII. Distinct, the last battle of the NCC-1701 D was impressive and the brief meeting of Captains James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Picard did provide Straggle fans with some curious and absorbing moments, but what fans really wanted was a muscular…action movie with a mission (and antagonists) splendid of the Next Generation crew and the unique, top-of-the line Enterprise E.

Star Trek: First Contact brings relieve the Borg, a run of half-organic, half cybernetic beings whose goal is to raze other races by assimilating their technology and transforming the survivors by injecting cramped nanoprobes that turn humans, Vulcans, El-Aurians — anyone, really — into unfeeling, relentless drones. As fans of the 1987-1994 syndicated series know, Capt. Picard was once captured by the Borg and transformed into Locutus, a Borg strategist/spokesdrone whose intimate knowledge of Starfleet technology, its tactics and its officers nearly spelled definite defeat for the Federation at the Battle of Wolf 359.

Now, several years later, the Borg are aid and meaner than ever. Having been thwarted more than once in the 24th Century by Picard and his crew, the Borg Queen (Alice Krige) leads a single-cubeship invasion force into Federation spot, hoping to defeat the Federation by either conquering Earth in a battle against Starfleet…or tinkering with the timeline and going support to the 21st Century to prevent humanity’s first contact with another spacefaring urge.

Actor Jonathan Frakes (Cmdr. Will Riker) makes his feature film directing debut in this eighth installment of the Star Hasten movie series, and although he would only hiss the weaker Star Trek: Insurrection, he does a gargantuan job at helming a very high-octane action flick that involves time depart, situation battles, a strong Picard/Data storyline and elements from The Unique Series, The Next Generation, Deep Residence Nine and the then-still unique Voyager.

Guest stars James Cromwell (The Sum of All Fears, Babe) and Alfre Woodward join the cast of TNG as warp-drive inventor Zefram Cochrane and his friend and assistant Lily, who add a definite mixture of edginess and wit to the film. Cromwell fares particularly well as Cochrane, a character first seen in The Modern Series episode Metamorphosis. While Cromwell doesn’t remotely peer like the then-30 or 40-something Glen Corbett, he portrays the legendary “father of warp drive” as a very human and flawed genius — he is cranky, cynical and drinks arrangement too powerful — who is bemused by the hero-worship he receives from the Enterprise crew. He also gets some of the best lines. (My favorite: “You’re astronauts…on some kind of star fling? “)

Also contributing to the excitement is Jerry Goldsmith’s obtain, a mixture of a resplendent modern main theme and such familiar touchstones as Alexander Courage’s fanfare for the Unusual Series theme and Goldsmith’s possess “Main Theme” for Star Trek’s first feature film (and later adapted as The Next Generation’s main title) .

Although First Contact does require some familiarity with the Star Run universe and its history, it’s clearly among the best of the 10 in the series.

Each sure comment that precedes this is good. I watched this movie yesterday. I couldn’t win my eyes off it. Everything taking residence onscreen was riveting, from the simple act of walking down a shaded lonely road in the rain, to a wild hump by three desperate detectives. This movie held me in thrall.

As a fresh viewer of Asian movies, I try to analyze the reason I tend not to be alive to in western works any longer. I finally came to the conclusion that it has to do with the accessibility of the players. They seem to be people first, actors by choice, and stars, by the public making them so.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Memories of Murder! Click Here

In Memories of Abolish, I saw this human factor almost too painfully. By the extinguish of the fable, I was in tears. Even now, the mood prevails. It’s been so long since these crimes took state, and I don’t know absolutely that they remain unsolved, but I assume it’s the case, and I assume about that.

The actors have become the people in my mind, and the detestable sense of defeat that becomes palpable eventually, is heartbreaking. When one relates to the inroads made on the health; mental and physical; of the detectives, who are ultimately portrayed as tireless and completely dedicated to the case, you realize that you’ve watched something that is historic. You have seen the probable truth.

The method this movie draws you into it, so that you are walking through hazardous rain, with a warning bawl in your throat, points to the brilliance of the director and the players.

It is difficult to say, “I savor this movie”, objective as it is hard to say, I like Silence of the Lambs, because care for is a strange word to expend for such fare.

But yes, I fancy it for the fact that during it, I was in a microscopic village in South Korea in a dreadful era of air-raid warnings, military dictatorship, and the hopeless pursuit of a serial killer, and landed aid here in this time and station with a thud, only after turning off the DVD player, and going to the kitchen for a glass of water. I was there, I felt the desperation, and I felt the defeat and the sorrow of the detectives, who were essentially decent enough human beings when all was said and done.

There are not many movies that can time-travel you into their explain. This will do it.

I most seriously recommend that you plan the interviews with the director and the stars (all of them are stars of a special kind in my mind) in order to dispel some of the possess the memoir will have on you.

These are incredibly bewitching people, and it’s a sheer joy to gape them smiling and calm. They’re shimmering, educated and yelp. The younger members of the cast, the less seasoned, are so elegant in their desire to do it proper.

They definitely did it accurate. They were extraordinary, and they thanked the interviewer. How glowing that was to search for.

I watched the movie using the English subtitles rather than the English dubbing because I wanted the authenticity. The subtitles were very superb.

Heads up, everyone! Despite the fact that Nancy Allen is listed here by amazon.com as starring in this film, she most definitely does not. The film being advertised here as due to be released on DVD in August 2005 in the U.S. is a Korean film originally released overseas in 2003 under the title “Salinui Chueok,” its title in English being “Memories of Destroy.” It’s an unbelievable, new, intense, sometimes hilarious, always fiercely shimmering kill mystery from the distinguished young Korean director Joon-ho Bong and features a 100% Korean cast speaking Korean (with English subtitles) . Nancy Allen only wishes she’d been in this movie!

A few hours ago I was in the grip of insomnia and was playing around with Comcast On Ask to contemplate if there was anything worth seeing that I hadn’t seen already when I noticed a fraction under Free Movies called “Palm Pictures,” a allotment I hadn’t explored before. I clicked on “Palm Pictures,” then on “Palm Festival,” saw “Memories of Abolish” listed, read the brief synopsis, and figured, what the heck, there’s no better time to peek a Korean film than 2 a.m., so I went for it, figuring it wouldn’t be a tragedy if I injure up dozing off …

Not a chance! I was wide-eyed with my mouth originate from beginning to demolish. Never even made it to the fridge. Forgot all about eating, drinking, or even breathing at times, and sleep was definitely not an option. Once the extinguish credits rolled, I was hurtling toward my computer with one interrogate in my mind: “Who is this unbelievable dude Joon-ho Bong, and where oh where can I pick a DVD of this movie? ”

Well … turns out you can score inexpensive DVDs of Joon-ho Bong’s “Memories of Assassinate” on eBay, but I contemplate they’re Station 0 imports, which isn’t saying they’re terrible necessarily, but now that I’ve discovered that a State 1 DVD is coming out in the U.S. a scant few weeks from now, I’m holding out for it. I only hope it has all of the special features (interviews with the director and the actors, special effects commentary, an alternate ending, some discussion of the trusty murders in Korea upon which the film’s sage was based, etc.) I’ve seen mentioned on the Internet as being demonstrate on the European and Asian DVDs.

What an eye-opener this film was for me! Expedient acting. Sparkling photography. Slightly wonderful dwelling in parts, but I doubt you’ll care; I definite didn’t. “Silence of the Lambs” was incredible in parts as well but was smooth riveting. I found the Korean language in this film interesting to listen to and wasn’t bugged by the subtitles at all. In fact, half the time I forgot to read the subtitles because whatever I needed to know was all in the actors’ faces and in the landscape … and what faces! What a landscape!

Oh, and Nancy Allen actually did appear in a mediocre 1990 made-for-TV movie called “Memories of Abolish,” but it’s not the same as Joon-ho Bong’s blockbuster Korean hit “Memories of Assassinate” from 2003, so be careful when you order, and please glimpse the terrific review (wish I’d written it!) of Joon-ho Bong’s “Memories of Kill” at the IMDb website for more details.

Whatever you do, don’t miss this film!

I dont know what people score it nefarious with this reveal. But personally… I admire it! I like it! I care for it! And this is a heavenly warning, this review kinda covers the whole first season to which this particular DVD is impartial the first.

Sure it maybe about spinning tops. But c’mon, in game gimmick animes, cards and electronic geegaws are so mainstream, they became uninteresting. Atleast for me. Beyblade brings a nice current scramble on game anime, pardon the pun.

I esteem the characters! For me, I can peer the ample divercity in all of the characters, and I have found some characters who prove up a miniature later (not in this DVD, but later in the series, which I have watched in whole) plainly hilarious! Who wouldn’t catch Max’s antics even a runt amusing?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Beyblade - Let It Rip! Click Here

The site may have it’s loop holes, but what anime doesn’t? I dont want to go too in depth about the situation in fright of spoiling it for you. But the space is a bit more than spinning tops and tournaments, and in the the demolish of the first season it does rep a miniature gloomy and somewhat disturbing. I dare anyone here to go over a poisonous snake pit on monkey bars. (The demolish of the season will clarify that one)

Kids in the family will Cherish this. But it may not be exactly for the very young viewers (no one younger than 9 or 8), as it does gather a diminutive sunless at times.

If you’re over 9 and maybe seen the dub, you dont know what you’re missing. The dub reduce out all the respectable stuff to be unbiased. And I’m proud to say that I’m tickled my 12 year feeble cousin got me into this series.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Beyblade - Let It Rip! Click Here

It’s a well-worth item for pre-teens, and maybe even for family viewing. And I have a feeling girls will treasure this one objective as noteworthy as boys. Though maybe for different reasons.

Now… I don’t know what that other person down there was ranting on about how Beyblade is childish, unimaginative, blah blah blah… Apt.

You contemplate… those are the kinds of people that maybe examine 5 mins of it, reach to the conclusion that the prove is meant for people with the mentality of a banana, and then go and rant. They don’t luxuriate in the fable, the characters, whatever.

Now the thought may be a bit… unique. Spinning tops. Alot of people consider that the game originated from the note. Foul. Note came after manga came after game. Top came first. Manga created by Aoki Takao. Manga adapted to TV prove by d-Rights. Aired on TV-TOKYO in 2001. Yeah… it’s an uberly long commercial for a toy line that’s been around since 1996. But it detached rocks.

The sage revolves around a 10-year-old boy named Kinomiya Takao (or 13-year-old named Tyson Granger according to the dub >>;) that is a beyblader. He has been beyblading practically his entire life, ever since his older brother started when he was Takao’s age. That, and he manages to do kendo as well. =P

I’d go on, but that’s too remarkable to type. Later on you procure introduced to the rest of the main characters — the enigmatic Hiwatari Kai, kitty-boi Kon Rei, and the hyper cutie Mizuhara Max.

For a point to about spinning tops, it’s gained some older fans too (like me ^_~) . I’d examine it if I were you.

The definition of the Japanese word ronin describes it as a samurai who has lost his master from the kill of or the descend of his master. John Frankenheimer (with some final draft befriend with the script from David Mamet) takes this idea of a masterless samurai and brings to it a post-Cold War setting and sensibility that more than pay homage to the astronomical stories and film of the ronin. One particular tale about ronin that Frankenheimer references in detail is the classic legend of the 47 Ronin. Ronin shows that in the latter-stages of his career, Frankenheimer was composed the master of the political/spy-thriller genre. He infuses the film with a valid hard-edge and was able to mix together both intelligence and energy in both the quieter and action-packed sequences in the film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ronin! Click Here

The film begins quietly with the introduction of the characters to be enthusiastic. We meet each individual in this aloof 10-minute scene that shows Frankenheimer’s skill as a director more than Michael Bay can in two-hours of mind-numbing action. Robert De Niro as one of the two American mercenaries (or contractors) instantly becomes the focal point for everyone. His casual, but attentive reconnoitering of the Paris bar where the first meet occurs helps fabricate tension without being overt. It’s with the introduction of Jean Reno as the Frenchman in the group that we rep the buddy-film dynamic as De Niro and Reno fast earn a believable camaraderie born of the times for such men during and after the Frigid War. The rest of the cast is rounded out by an helpful and high-energy turn from Sean Bean as an English contractor who might not be all that he brags to be. The other American in the group was played by Skipp Sudduth who in his have understated procedure more than kept up with the high-caliber of actors around him. Finishing off and adding the darker and seedier aspects of the cast were Stellan Skarsgard as a old Eastern Bloc (maybe ex-KGB) operative and Jonathan Pryce as a wanted IRA commander wanted by all. The only shatter in all the male testosterone in the film was able played by the splendid, yet tough Natasha McElhone. Like Sudduth, McElhone more than keeps up and matches acting skills with the likes of De Niro, Reno and Skarsgard.

The film moves from the meeting of the group to the right operation which brought all these disparate characters together. Taking a page from Hitchcock, Frankenheimer and Mamet introduces what would become the film’s MacGuffin. A MacGuffin being a area plot which helps motivates each character of its importance and yet we’re left to acquire only that the item is vital without ever finding out why. The MacGuffin in Ronin ends up being a silver case which the IRA terrorists, the Russian Mob and seemingly every intelligence agency in Europe wants to accumulate their hands on. It’s up to De Niro and his group to win the case from another party and this was where Frankenheimer’s skill in seemlessly blending spy-thriller and action film shows. From the set-up of the team and their plans, to a advance double-cross during an arms deal to the valid operation to engage the case, Ronin begins to depart at a clipped and tension-filled creep. There’s no overly extraneous dialogue. Mamet’s script-doctoring fleshes out the memoir and adds a sense and feel of gleaming professionalism to the characters. Outside of the Bean’s braggart Englishman who gets his commeuppance from DeNiro’s strict professional, everyone in the group had a skill to contribute to the operation and all did it well and believable.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ronin! Click Here

The action sequences mostly alive to car chases through the narrow streets of Nice, France to the metropolitan thoroughfares and tunnels of Paris. Frankenheimer shines in creating and directing these sequences. Sequences which he’d decided against the utilize of CGI. Using what he’d learned and perfected from his contain past as a broken-down hurry car driver and from his gain classic film Sizable Prix, Frankenheimer passe precise life cars and drove them through accurate (albeit choreographed) traffic to give the sequences that sense of reality and urge that one couldn’t gather with CGI. The car trot scene within the Paris thoroughfare tunnel against traffic has to go down as one of the best car journey set aside on film. I and those I saw the film with were on the edge of our seats as both protagonists and antagonists weaved their draw through Parisian traffic at high-speed and gunfire. The crashes caused by this car traipse looked believable and horrific yet the audience doesn’t ogle away from the hide. With honest abit of wait on from second unit directors Luc Etienne and Michel Cheyko, Frankenheimer stunning grand did most of the filming of the car chases. At times being in the car itself and doing some of the driving.

The legend itself, after all the characterizations and high-energy, tense action sequences, was really bare bones and in itself its enjoy MacGuffin. The yarn unprejudiced becomes a prop way to encourage demonstrate the mercenaries’ special sense of honor in regards to working with people who might’ve been enemies in the past and the sunless world they now live in after the collapse of the sad and white sensibility that was the Frosty War. One shrimp bit of trivia that I found spellbinding was the fact that Ronin included quite abit of actors who portrayed past James Bond villains: Sean Bean (Janus), Jonathan Pryce (Carver) and Michael Lonsdale (Drax) .

In the demolish, Ronin became the last stout film from a tall director. I don’t count Reindeer Games as anything but Frankenheimer picking up a check and the studio dabbling overmuch in the final gaze and feel of that film. Frankenheimer’s Ronin is a blend of bright dialogue, hard-edged characters, and tense-filled action that he manages to blend together to create a shapely and luminous film. The record may not have made actual sense in the demolish, but the hurry the audience takes with DeNiro, Reno and McElhone’s character in getting there made for a tall time for all.

This movie is an instant classic for Robert De Niro and Jean Reno fans. Natascha McElhone is a shapely dazzler combining a sensuous understated beauty with a journeyman actor’s presence. With a simple survey or a roll of her eyes she speaks volumes. De Niro has never been tougher or more compelling as the everyman, Sam. He reminds me of Bogart in his grittier roles. Jean Reno is swiftly becomming one of my common actors. He is a man’s man with a loyal delivery and deep dark eyes. He also adds the aura of the world weary but stoic Frenchman to the mix. I esteem French and the bits of French dialogue interspersed in the movie resonate with wryness. The interplay and rapport between the Jean Reno and Robert DeNiro characters plays proper and is one of my accepted things about this relatively realistic action film. Frankenheimer has a marvelous study for detail and the cutters have done a excellent job. This sage will support you on edge for most of its running length. The action scenes are slash in tremendous swaths that leave you wanting more. Accept this film and an Audi S8 while you’re at it. You wont be sorry.

I recently travelled to Africa and bought this video prior to leaving. Not only is the video completly factual in its portrayal of the magical Serengeti, but the cinematography is reliable. In addition, children fair Like it! My 3 year worn neice couldn’t end watching it. Disney is nothing compared to this video! I recommend it highly!!

This documentary of the expansive Serengeti which spans from Tanzania to Kenya is a visual feast, and follows the wonderful migration of the million wildebeest and several thousand zebra that sail from the dust of the southern drought to the vegetation in the northern regions. Along the scheme they pass by many predators, with some of the herd falling prey to them. We also view many diverse species of the state, among them a baboon community, the majestic beauty of a herd of elephants, and many scenes of maternal care for that are endearing, even with the ungainly and massive gloomy rhino.

We eye a hungry cheetah saunter after a gazelle, the lions at play and as rulers of the plains, visit with the stunning Masai tribe, and concept the fantastic vistas from a hot air balloon. The most memorable scene in the film is on the wildebeest’s return to the south, where they must collect across a river flooded by the rain. The crocodiles lie in wait for this event, and many from the herd also perish from exhaustion. The size and scope of this river crossing makes it an image one will never forget. The cinematography by Andrew Kitzanuk is spectacular, and makes this one of the best documentaries I have seen for sheer viewing spectacle on the subject of African wildlife.

Written, directed and produced by George Cassey, the emphasis is on the poetry of the land, rather than a long list of facts and figures. Narrated by James Earl Jones, his sonorous inform is always easy on the ears, as he says things like “Life streams across a land suspended in time.” Also nice to listen to is the gorgeous salvage by Hans Zimmer and George Cadebe, which includes some haunting vocals.

It is so gratifying to finally peruse a major motion describe made about the WWII Russian Front. After all, it was the Red Army that inflicted 80% of Germany’s total casualties in the war, a fact that many Americans remain sadly ignorant of. It is high time we come by past Frosty War attitudes and pay tribute to the heroism of the Soviet Union in its bitter but ultimately triumphant struggle against Nazism. _Enemy at the Gates_ is a movie of memoir proportions, featuring sterling overall performances by a solid cast as well as a spectacular cinematic recreation of the bombed-out city of Stalingrad.

Still, the movie tends to bolt at times, and could have been mighty better. The appreciate triangle subplot was more of a distraction than anything else, taking up time that could have been better broken-down to hiss more of the awesome epic of the battle of Stalingrad as a whole. Rather than simply having the German commander status, “These snipers are demoralizing my people,” it would have been nice to have actually “seen” a cramped bit more of how the actions of Zaitsev and the Soviet snipers wore down the vaunted German infantry. Regrettably, the duel between Zaitsev and Koenig seemed to be taking set in a separate reality than the war itself, almost giving the impression that both sides had an unwritten agreement to let the two rivals shoot it out without interference. Also, the abrupt ending gave no explanation as to how the Red Army, seemingly on the ropes throughout the movie, suddenly emerged victorious. It would not have taken great film time to clarify how this came about: the tenacity of Stalingrads defenders drew the mechanized German forces into costly city fighting, allowing the Red Armys much reserves massed to the north and south to punch through the passe Axis flanks and encircle the Germans. Saving Private Ryan succeeded in telling noteworthy of the legend of the Normandy invasion in a plan that neatly complimented the movies place. I wish that Enemy at the Gates had made more of a similar distress.

I know that dramatic license is a fact of life with historical movies, but it is plot overdone in this one. The opening sequence of the Volga crossing is mighty filmmaking and is mostly honest up until Zaitsev and his fellow soldiers enter the city. The following piece about only every other man receiving a weapon and being sent of in a suicide charge is purely the stuff of anecdote, though, more fitting of the WWI Russian Army or a Soviet punishment battalion. The reality was that the Red Army in Stalingrad fought mostly in miniature detachments armed with submachine guns rather than rifles, lively stealthily amongst the rubble and ambushing the Germans in brutal house-to-house fighting. This sort of close-quarter combat, where the front lines were often separated by less than 20 yards (or even a mere hallway or staircase), would have played out on veil unbiased as well (better, in fact) as the charge of the Red horde that is the stuff of well-liked imagination rather than factual history. The conclusion of this scene is misleading, as well. The Soviets did shoot many deserters who attempted to cruise the front lines, but this degree of harshness did not apply to survivors of a failed attack as shown in the film. The commanders of the Red Army were often brutal towards their men, but not quite that brutal. As for the intention the sniper duel is finally brought to a end, with Koenig walking honest in lifeless belief towards what he suspects is the region where he has fair shot Zaitsev tedious, it is unprejudiced ridiculous. Not even a rookie sniper would have made such a fatal error, noteworthy less an instructor.

The Soviet characters all part the names of exact people, but none are factual to their real-world counterparts. Vassili Zaitsev was more of a natural leader than the movie gives him credit for, not impartial a vexed boy from the Urals reluctantly pushed into the limelight. Danilov, the political officer, appears to have been crafted by the screenwriters almost solely in order to form a faddish brilliant statement about the pitfalls of Communist idealism. The actual Danilov was shot (though not fatally) when he foolishly stood up to point out Major Koenigs plot to Zaitsev, not in an act of suicide. Tania Chernovas on-screen character was the furthest from reality, though. She was actually a short, morose blonde who had previously fought as a partisan in Byelorussia and the Ukraine. A conventional killer by the time she arrived in Stalingrad and possessing a single-minded hatred of the Germans, the real-life Tania could hardly have been more different from the sensitive student/soldier who never actually fires her rifle once throughout the whole film. Also, Chernova was likely Ukrainian, not Jewish (only worth noting because of the widespread yarn that most Ukrainians welcomed the Nazis as liberators from Soviet rule) . Ironically, the character that seemed truest to reality was Major Koenig, a black figure who some historians claim might never have existed.

Though I worn most of the plot here to criticize this movie, I guess the fact that I bought the DVD means that I nonetheless enjoyed it. I probably would have rated it better were I not such a Russian history buff. Do yourself a favor and remove the time to read both _Enemy at the Gates_, by William Craig (a very readable non-fiction anecdote of the whole Stalingrad campaign) and _War of the Rats_, by David Robbins (a novelized version of the sniper duel that is both a better account and closer to historical fact than this movie was) . My main regret is that the films potential was largely squandered to form room for unneeded political rhetoric and melodrama. I only hope that its mediocre performance will not discourage film producers from backing other Russian Front projects in the future.

After many major Hollywood epics about the war on the Western Front (THE LONGEST DAY, PATTON, A BRIDGE TOO FAR, BATTLE OF THE BULGE, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN), it is long overdue that ENEMY AT THE GATES, centered on the pivotal battle for Stalingrad, should play to audiences … particularly American audiences.

The core of the situation is the personal duel between two expert snipers, the Red Army’s Vasily Zaitsev (Jude Law) and the German Wehrmacht major, Koenig (Ed Harris), the latter brought into the Stalingrad cauldron to extinguish the worn before he totally destroys the morale of the German troops trying to pick the city. It’s a cat and mouse confrontation depicted with startling realism, though, in this case, the mouse is unbiased as deadly as the cat. The rest of the film is impartial window dressing, especially the sappy adore triangle between Zaitsev, political commissar Danilov (Joseph Fiennes), and a female Red Army sniper, Tania, played by Rachel Weisz.

The film, residence among the rubble and destroyed factories of Stalin’s city, is visually shapely. The performances of Law, Harris and Fiennes are suited, as is that by Bob Hoskins, who plays Joe Stalin’s political representative on the scene, Nikita Krushchev. My complaints center on the accents of the main characters, which don’t sound Russian by any stretch of the imagination, the previously-mentioned and totally superfluous like account, and the fact that the Krushchev is given plan too grand conceal time at the expense of the Russian general, Chuikov, who doesn’t even appear, even though he was the Red Army’s military commander whose gritty defense of the city ultimately prevailed.

This myth of the duel between Zaitsev and his German nemesis is based in fact, though a better telling of the sage is the work of book fiction, WAR OF THE RATS, by David Robbins. If you’re involved in this footnote to the Stalingrad struggle, the book is a “must”, and the film will relieve as favorable visual reinforcement.

I was lucky enough to view an near screening of this movie the past weekend and *highly* recommend it to everyone: kids, adults, monsters–you all have to go perceive this one! The newest movie from CGI geniuses Pixar, the studio that brought you the “Toy Chronicle” movies and “A Bug’s Life”, is a sheer delight from beginning to waste. The characters are cleverly designed and fun to inspect, the animation is brisk and quick-witted, the dialogue amusing and stunning, the snarl casting perfect, and most primary of all, the epic compelling and engaging. This is a cartoon that insults no one’s intelligence–it’s perfect for the kids as well as adults, without condescending or sinking into juvenile humor (well, there are a few toilet jokes, but they’re so lightly done as to be inoffensive to anyone) .

This “E.T. in reverse” tale has astounding location ideas–monsters in the closet dread human kids to manufacture “yowl energy” to power their city, Monsteropolis–but monsters are as terrorized of kids as kids they are of monsters. When a charming and cuddly cramped tot nicknamed “Boo” escapes into the monster world, it’s up to scaremonster Sulley and his nervous cohort Mike to effect the kid, save her attend where she belongs, and maintain anyone else from finding out she’s loose in the monster world–but Sulley’s foul co-worker Randall (a charmingly oily chameleon) has devious plans for microscopic Boo…

There’s so powerful detail going on that this one demands you inspect it multiple times (and with a situation, characters and boom acting as charming as this, you will *want* to) . The sigh acting is spot-on (I’ve always felt John Goodman was a spacious actor; who would have ever expected a blue and purple monster would be one of his finest roles? ) and the care and attention Pixar has do into the making of this film shows: every frame sparkles with color and wit, and the last-act lag through the Monsters, Inc. factory, where Sulley, Mike, Boo and Randall leap from closet door to closet door thousands of feet above the factory floor is amazingly designed, radiant and inspired, a breathtaking edge-of-your-seat trudge that rivals the Death Star Attack in “Star Wars.” Best of all, it features a sweet and emotional ending that had the cynical Modern York professional crowd I was seeing it with literally go “Awwwwwwwwww…” aloud. And if you have any doubt as to the sense of fun that this movie inspires, check out Sulley and Mike’s Amazon.com Customer Reviews and Wish Lists! Heck, *I’d* assume Mike that copy of Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Seek”!

“Monsters, Inc”: the best inspiring film of the year? Absolutely…maybe even the best *film* of the year. Certainly the most fun–and that’s exactly what we need apt now.

Great animation and account. I took my 3 yr broken-down to inspect the movie at a preview and that’s all she has talked about for the last 2 days. I assume she enjoyed it as remarkable as I did. It will be on my wish list for Christmas (and I’m 36 yrs conventional) . You have to hold your kids to peer it.

I absorb both the US and international versions of this film, and the international edition is powerful better. Both versions carry a microscopic sexual tension throughout between Leon and Matilda, and the uncut version is more pronounced in this site, but that isn’t the reason to catch it.

The extra 24 minutes on the uncut version provides a deeper thought of the relationship between the two as the film progresses. For example, in the US version Matilda never becomes a right “cleaner” or hitman. It’s only hinted at when they shoot a jogger from a rooftop with blanks. In the uncut version, Leon takes her completely under his hover and teaches her the trade, including scenes where the pair bustle around killing dreadful guys and such. In the process, Leon teaches her the “ring trick” by tossing a grenade at a victim and keeping the ring and grenade pin in his hand. This scene sets up the final scenes in the movie in a design that the US version left short and unexplained.

If you enjoyed the US version, you’ll probably care for the uncut version more, if only because the characters and their relationships are grand deeper.

French director Luc Besson (”The Messenger”; “The Fifth Element”) made his U.S. film debut with this luminous thriller of an Italian hitman who is untouchable. “The Professional” stars Jean Reno (”The Tremendous Blue”) who plays Leon, a professional hitman with ninja-like skills, who eliminates rivals for a mob boss (Danny Aiello) .

After a bad cop (Gary Oldman) eliminates the family residing next door due to a drug transaction gone improper, Leon finds himself the guardian of young Mathilda (Natalie Portman in her conceal debut) . Taking Mathilda under his helm, Leon teaches her the art of the “cleaner”. However, concern lurks around every corner, and Leon must protect Mathilda from the same cops who killed her family.

Considered by many to be his masterpiece, “The Professional” was originally released internationally under the title “Leon”. However due to the feeling that American audiences might gain some material unacceptable, over 24 minutes of the film was edited out. Finally, Columbia/Tri-Star has made an profitable decision in releasing the uncut, international version of this kindly film in the U.S. as it originally was called in August 2000.

While the film’s central theme revolves around Leon and his job, the subplot where Mathilda develops an attraction for Leon is reminiscent of the novel/film “Lolita”. The chemistry between both characters in a father/daughter relationship can be intense, especially as we inspect that Mathilda is in her puberty-stage.

Jean Reno is noble as always, and Gary Oldman gives a chilling performance as Stansfield, the imperfect DEA officer who murdered Mathilda’s family in chilly blood. However, the true scene-stealer in this film has to be Natalie Portman. This graceful young girl radiates beauty and professionalism throughout the film. Her porcelain-looking skin, and her ample brown eyes are well utilized in this film, making her character more childish, yet conventional to a obvious extent. Portman proved to audiences in this film that she was no flash in the pan, and in her subsequent films, she continues to be a scene-stealer. She is truly Hollywood’s most gifted young actress.

In the international version, most of the 24 minutes that were left out in the film’s 1994 release in the U.S. mainly involves both Leon and Mathilda going on “cleaning sweeps” where she gets first hand training in the art of assassination. The other half of these minutes focuses on Mathilda’s attraction to Leon. Her persistent attempts to be intimate with Leon all fail, but we finally understand why Leon remains a loner when it comes to affairs if the heart. Some might be melancholy about the belief of Mathilda and Leon sharing a bed together, but Besson paints this scene as one though-provoking platonic like and not sex.

In wrapping up, I recommend this film for anyone who enjoys a nonstop, high-impact thriller in the same tradition as the “Matrix,” “Blade,” or “Boring Level-headed”. Luc Besson truly is one of the world’s greatest action directors, and “Leon” captures his magic. An safe, pulstaing film from beginning to extinguish!

Roman Polanski was still a newcomer to the world of cinema when he unleashed this unforgettable exercise in skin-crawling terror. Repulsion was the Polish director’s first film in English, but that hardly mattered: much of the movie is as wordless (and as weird) as the silent Nosferatu. The young Catherine Deneuve plays a Belgian girl stranded in ’60s London, a shy beauty with no social skills. When her sister leaves their shared flat, Deneuve goes gradually, quietly, completely mad. Her world becomes Polanski’s paintbox, as the devilish director distorts reality via a series of surrealistic touches (grasping hands that protrude from elastic walls) and out-and-out murderous horror. Very few films cast the kind of eerie spell that this 1965 classic achieves, and it clearly points the way toward Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby. As with most of the director’s work, what is unsettling is not the overt violence, but the terrifying sense of emptiness and isolation, and the boiling unease inside one’s own mind. –Robert Horton
